Insurance History Essay

Some 2,000 years ago in Roman times a form of life insurance was practiced by burial societies who paid out funeral costs of members funded by monthly contributions. It is thought that these were year to year arrangements but unfortunately there is not enough evidence remaining to be exact on how they operated. In Britain in the middle ages Trade Guilds provided funeral costs to members in much the same way. The earliest life insurance policy in England was recorded as being effected on the 15th June 1583. The policy was on the life of a William Gybbons (a salter in the City of London) and was taken out by a Richard Martin. The premium was set at  £8 per  £100 pounds of benefit insured. Even at that early date it is of interest that when the policy ended in a claim there was dispute between the insurer and the policy holder over whether the policy should pay up. Luckily for Richard Martin he won the case and the insurer lost. In those days life insurance policies where underwritt en by individuals as opposed to insurance companies. It was also common practice for people to take out life policies on the rich and famous in the hope that they might benefit if that person died. We would have regarded it as a form of gabling. The first actual life insurance company was the Annuity Association founded by the Rev Dr Assheton on the 4th October 1699. Unfortunately this company only survived for 46 years before going bankrupt. Many life insurers were set up as mutual companies where ownership of the company was among the members of the life fund. The policies did not have fixed sums insured as they do today, but instead the fund would pay out what it could afford based on the number of people in the fund that died that year. Now we can be thankful that life insurance has developed since those days. Most policies offer fixed sum insured which can be up to very large amounts. There are a numerous number of insurers all vying for your business. Not only are there pure protection policies but also those which are also linked to some form of investment factor. Life insurance law has grown up and now there are several layers of protection for the naà ¯ve consumer. Whilst all these changes have been good for the co nsumer it also means that the consumer needs to be more aware of what type of life policy they need and where best to purchase that cover. Choice is a wonderful commodity but you need to be able to make a wise selection. More recent changes have been in the growth of life insurers and life insurance  intermediaries who are using the internet as a place of business. Is It Appropriate for Learning to Read? Essay

Dr. Carla Hannaford, an educator and neuroscientist, presented a revolutionary research that helped people have a better understanding of the things they know and those that they do. Dr. Hannaford’s book entitled Smart Moves: Why Learning Is Not All In Your Head, has been praised for the insightful link made between the body and learning. Joseph Clinton Pierce even considered it as a research work that is greatly significant in understanding education and child development. Aside from that book, she also authored the book, The Dominance Factor: How Knowing Your Dominant Eye, Ear, Brain, Hand, & Foot Can Improve Your Learning. In this book, she looked at the link between the part of a human’s body favored for â€Å"seeing, hearing, touching, and moving† and a person’s way of thinking, working, reading, playing, and interacting with others (Hannaford, 1997). Basically, the research study conducted by Dr. Hannaford scientifically elaborated and explained the connection of one’s mind and body movement and its implication in his/her learning and thinking abilities. In the Dominance Factor book, Hannaford emphasized on the idea that combining one’s dominant eye, ear, hand, and foot has tremendous effects in the way an individual learn. She also discussed the idea of an individual’s dominance profile. This dominance profile, which can be discovered in a simple and non-invasive muscle-testing, is a key element in molding a person’s way of thinking, acting and communicating with others. According to Hannaford, there are actually 32 different combinations of a person’s â€Å"dominant hemisphere, eye, ear, hand, and foot† (Hannaford, 1997). Each profile also helps a person identify what weaknesses they may encounter under stress. She even asserts that understanding one’s profile will help parents and even their children learn together in the best method suitable for them and that which will help the children perform at their highest capability (Hannaford, 1997). The concept presented by Dr. Hannaford could be tested and used in the different learning skills of people. Applying the dominance theory to an individual’s reading abilities is interesting but poses both a positive and a negative manifestation. Hannaford gave two major profile combinations that are easy to assess. She assumes that a person with a dominant â€Å"logic hemisphere, right eye, right ear, right hand, and right foot† understands better in a structured learning method and an orderly and chronological information presentation (Hughes & Vass, 2001). On the other hand, a person with a dominant â€Å"gestalt hemisphere, left eye, left ear, left hand, and left foot† learns faster through a perception of the bigger picture and understands the main idea yet has difficulty in looking at the details or the step-by-step procedures (Hughes & Vass, 2001). Being aware of this assessment, parents who will be able to easily identify the dominant profiles of their children will find it easier to teach their children how to read and read well considering that they will be able to apply the method that will be best applicable for their children. For the children, since their parents already know how they could read better, they will be able to find the learning process more enjoyable and to their advantage especially given that their parents applied the technique where their child may respond well. However, utilizing the dominance theory also poses negative consequences. Parents who are able to identify the dominant profiles of their children, whether it is as easy as the left and right combinations or more complex like an overlapping combination of the two, will only give focus on that dominant profile. In doing so, they are disregarding the development and enhancement of the other profiles of their children which is not that dominant but may well be applicable to their children. It somewhat constrains the parents to single-out the dominant profiles and set aside those which are not dominant at the moment. In all these, it is observable that any theory poses both positive and negative consequences. Although the ideas presented regarding the dominant profiles and reading skills is interesting, the parents should still consider the holistic growth of their children wherein the young ones develop all their skills as much as possible to their full potential and capabilities. To the over 300 million Buddhist’s throughout the world Buddhism is much more than a religion, it is a way of life. The path of a Buddhist can be summed up in three simple sentences. The first, lead a moral life. The second, be mindful of your thoughts and actions and lastly, develop wisdom and understanding. Buddhism is said to explain injustice within the world and at the same time provide its own code of ethics to live by, leading to true happiness. To understand Buddhism as a Christian you must first learn who Siddhartha Gautama was, what the four Noble Truths are, how it relates to Nirvana and finally how Buddhism parallels with Christianity. The majority of historians believe Buddhism originated in northern India sometime in 5th century B.C. Abstract: This experiment studies the conservation of linear momentum through a carefully calculated collision. Two gliders were used on an air track with different weights to demonstrate what would happen as gliders with varying masses collided into one another. Throughout the experiment the measured values of the momentum before and after the collision were used to calculate the total momentum conserved. Introduction: The question of whether or not momentum is lost or conserved during a collision has been a topic of interest for many years. When two objects of equal mass or varying masses collide what is the outcome? There were three different situations used in which the weights of the incident and target gliders were either equal or different. When the two masses are equal, the velocity should be exchanged from the incident glider to the target glider. Therefore, the incident glider takes on the velocity of the target glider and the target glider takes on the velocity of the incident glider. When the incident glider has a mass greater than the target glider, the target body takes up a velocity in the opposite direction that is twi ce the incident glider. After calculating the velocities and momentum of each collision, the percent uncertainty was calculated by gently pushing a glider through two photo-gates and recording the velocity of the glider through each one. Using the following formula, we calculated the percent difference which is also the percent uncertainty in our speed measurements: . Innovation model analysis of new energy vehicles: Toyota Toyota is perhaps the most spread vehicle company across the globe. It is established in 27 countries worldwide with 50 manufacturing facilities and worldwide car sales in over 160 countries. The quick integration of the new energy Toyota vehicle is attributed to its global presence, cooperation with higher institutions of learning, and creation of conducive environment for innovation such as the establishment of research institutions. For instance, The Research Institute (TRI) was established with the cooperation of Toyota and GM Group when it was first introduced in the United States. Tesla Tesla is currently ranked one among the top ten innovative companies in the vehicle manufacturing industry worldwide. Tesla has the advantage of innovation environment hence the reason for its remarkable growth within ten years only and without any experience in the automotive industry. The disruptive innovation of Tesla is attributed to the genius team behind the company production and operation activities (Hardman, Shiu and Steinberger-Wilckens, 2015). With Elon as the most significant member for providing Internet genes; Black in charge of user experience and Tesla CTO who oversees the technological aerospace of the company manufacturing process. BYD This company major in IT to achieve all its competitive advantage in the motor vehicle industry. It combines technologies in IT, vehicle and new energy and is ranked as a high-tech business worldwide. It is well-known for the benefits of its new energy innovation in motor batteries among other leading technologies. Additionally, they produce their batteries and other technology related gadgets for international companies like GM, Chrysler, etc., cooperated with giant global manufacturers to enhance their worldwide brand influence. Marketing and innovative strategy of BYD, Tesla, and Toyota BYD, Tesla, and Toyota have at least adopted the 4P approach in market positioning (Armstrong et al., 2015). Tesla is a luxurious car customized to suit and attract the rich who are in search for super quality and the desire for new things. BYD is the leading company in new energy vehicles in China and is made to suit the public transportation field. This is because of its energy saving and environmental protection features. Toyota is as well known for its hybrid technology car which is also a cushion for unpolluted electronic technology. The authors make four recommendations in four features of new energy vehicle innovation model. First, in the innovative ecological environment, the companies should focus on developing their technology in the areas of electronic control, batteries, and motor because the new energy motor vehicle sector is a high-tech sector. Secondly, market positioning should be aimed at the public transport sector to create awareness and then consider prices after recognition. Third, under the innovation path, the companies should comprehend the technology in new energy automotive to ensure long-term development. Lastly, the best business model should be that which incorporates all sectors and is inclusive of the government development business model because this will factor in much of research and development (Lane et al., 2015). Is Tesla a Disruptor? (And Why the Answer Matters) Tesla is regarded as an innovative disruptor by many market analysts, fanatical customers, and technology-oriented societies. However, there exists abundant evidence against this conclusion. For instance, the current company debt of approximately $10 billion in addition to its additional plan of borrowing $1.5 billion and the problem of transition to mass production. According to Downes and Nunes (2017), Tesla doesnt qualify to be a technology disruptor because the company doesnt meet the essential elements of a successful disruption and the authors further compare it with other companies that have surpassed the disruptor standards. The first evidence of how Tesla isnt a disruptive company is that it is not definite of the kind of disruptive technology it is offering. Tesla has been producing electric cars for ten years, and in fact, the company is not the first to manufacture electric vehicles, and neither is their technology improved than internal combustion. For example, the performance of the Tesla battery is much lower than fossil fuels and may not be much better for the next 50 years. Additionally, the current state of competition in the motor vehicle industry is not promising for Tesla, and thus no guarantee of the company is the leader in any automotive technology. This is also true because the competitors are likely to engage same suppliers like Tesla in addition to Tesla minimizing their advantage of proprietary inventions through its decision of sharing all its patents in 2014 (Karamitsios, 2013). The leading brand of the company, for now, is luxury and quality (Mangram, 2012), but this is a feature that is abundant in the market considering examples like BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes. Regarding market positioning, Tesla is commonly compared superficially with Apple but these companies when analyzed in detail they differ regarding technology disruption. For instance, the iPhone doesnt have the competitively-priced Model 3, but the reinvention of digital cameras and mobile phones and some other products enabled it to a achieve a significant market share. Also, Apple was able to produce millions of new products right from the beginning to the end, unlike Tesla. The authors affirm their arguments by comparing Tesla with right Big Bang Disruption companies such as Netflix and Amazon Kindle. A successful disruption often demands a vigorous manufacturing distribution, constant revenue supply from established products and capacity to supply industry demands within short order. Tesla doesnt meet any of these, and its uncertainty regarding government grants further worsens its situation. Even if the company supplies all its pre-ordered 3s Models on time, the initial excitement for a new product doesnt imply sustainable sales in the future (Trop and Cardwell, 2014). For example, the customers that turned up for the launch of the iWatch were all the likely customers (Mobile Apps, 2013). It is recommended that for Tesla to become a technological disruptor, the company should fully automate its manufacturing and work towards improving its artificial intelligence and robotics because these are some of the technologies that have not been fully ventured into. Critical evaluation of the two articles There is a lot of variation in the articles regarding the evidence provided in support of the conclusions. Liu and Meng (2017) discuss innovation model analysis of new energy vehicles considering three vehicle manufacturing companies namely Toyota, BYD, and Tesla. The study and comparison are conducted considering four aspects of new energy vehicle innovation such as innovative ecological environment, market positioning, creative path and business model. On the contrary, Downes and Nunes (2017) in arguing whether Tesla is a disruptor only considers Tesla but in comparison with companies such as Netflix and Amazon Kindle. The other aspects considered by Downes and Nunes include the financial capacity and revenue of the company as evidence of Tesla not being an innovative company. Thus the article by Liu and Meng is structured and comprehensive than that of Downes and Nunes because in analyzing new energy vehicles, it is proper that various aspects are considered to make an informed de cision. Liu and Meng compares and contrasts innovation model analysis of new energy vehicles using motor vehicle manufacturing companies which are in the same industry. This comparison is unbiased because the companies are likely to face similar challenges in resources, competition, and technology innovation. The contrast and evaluation of Downes and Nunes are somewhat biased because the authors compare Tesla Company with Netflix and Amazon Kindle which happen to be in different industries. The challenges faced by Netflix and Amazon Kindle may not necessarily be similar to those faced by Tesla. Thus the conclusion reached might as well be incomprehensive. For instance, Downes and Nunes list the examples of success disruptor companies not in the vehicle manufacturing sector then concludes that since Tesla doesnt meet any of the qualifications, then it doesnt qualify to be an innovative company. Liu and Meng use experimented scientific business models (Liu and Chen, 2013; Xie et al., 2015, and Wang, Chen and Jiang, 2015) to lay the foundation of their model analysis of the new energy vehicle innovation. Furthermore, the analysts provide some illustrations for each company to explain the market positioning, innovative ecological environment, creative path and the business model innovation. Whereas Downes and Nunes do not cite any researched model to base their conclusion neither do they adopt any scientific method but rather on logical reasoning and comparison with companies of the different sector. Conclusion The discussion on the innovation in the new energy vehicles and which company is a technological disruptor is a debate that has received different conclusions based on the aspects under consideration. This is because many different factors can be considered in determining the leading technology disruptor in the motor vehicle industry. However, new energy vehicle technology innovation needs to be developed further and the products made available to both the private and public sector. Midsummer Nights Dream And Love What is True Love? The overriding theme of the play "A Midsummer Night's Dream" by William Shakespeare deals with the nature of love. Though true love seems to be held up as an ideal, false love is mostly what we are shown. Underneath his frantic comedy, Shakespeare seems to be asking the questions all lovers ask in the midst of their confusion: How do we know when love is real? How can we trust ourselves that love is real when we are so easily swayed by passion and romantic conventions? Some readers may sense bitterness behind the comedy, but will probably also recognize the truth behind Shakespeare's satire. Often, love leads us down blind alleys and makes us do things we regret later. The lovers within the scene, especially the men, are made to seem rather shallow. They change the objects of their affections, all the time swearing eternal love to one or the other. In this scene Shakespeare presents the idea that both false love and true love can prevail.. Throughout Act III Scene II, many conflicts arise. However, the main conflict within the scene is the confusion the lovers face when their perceptions are altered. This confusion enhances the central theme of true love versus false love. There are many aspects of the play that deal with this central theme, but it is most prevalent within this scene. The chaos reaches a climax causing great disruption among the lovers. However, the turmoil is eventually resolved by the character who is originally responsible for the confusion, Puck. Puck causes the disruption initially, when he intervenes in the lovers' business. Jester and jokester, Puck, otherwise known as Robin Goodfellow, is like a wild, untamed member of the fairy clan. Though fairy king Oberon tells him they are "spirits of another sort," Puck, with his connection to English legend and folklore, seems related to a slightly more dangerous kind of sprite. Not that he is truly malevolent, but his tricks make people uncomfortable. However, they don't seem to do any permanent damage. He casts an ironic eye on humanity. Thinking of people as fools, he loves to make fools of them. He expresses this idea when he states "What fools these mortals be..." But laughter, not tears, is his aim. With his quickness, ventriloquism, and shape-changing ability, he clearly has magic fairy powers of his own. Meddling in the affairs of lovers and administering Cupid's love juice, clearly presents Shakespeare's views on the nature of love. Puck's mischievous ways may allow him to meddle within the affairs of the lovers, however, does this interference do more harm than good? This scene begins with Oberon encountering Puck in the middle of the woods. Puck, very excited, explains his actions. He tells Oberon how he caused Titania to fall in love with Bottom, who now has a donkey head. Puck also tells him that the Athenians had been placed under the spell causing them to fall magically in love. Oberon is very pleased with Puck's efforts, and agrees that the situation turned out better than expected. However, Oberon soon realizes Puck had made a mistake by causing the Athenian to fall in love with the wrong person. Oberon admonishes Puck for his mistake. Because of Puck, true love has been turned, "and not a false turned true." Puck replies that those are the rules of fate. For every man holding true love, a million fail, breaking their oaths again and again. This was not exactly what Oberon had in mind, he was hoping to remedy a situation, not make it worse. Puck always tries to throw something extra into the situation; he enjoys complications. "Then fate o'er-rules, that, one man holding troth, A million fail, confounding oath on oath." By saying this, Puck makes it clear that the odds on finding true love are a million to one. It becomes clear that humans are going to need very accurate eyes to be able to see love clearly. Puck's mischief turns a supposedly true love inside out. However, this is not necessarily a bad thing. This mistake is used for the benefit of both Helena and Demetrius. Puck uses his magic to unite the lovers under a cloud of false love. This aspect of false love is what holds the lovers together, proving that false love can be just as strong as true love. The other aspect of the nature of love is that true love triumphs. This is proven through the characters Lysander and Hermia. Puck
